Joanna Maranhão is a Brazilian Olympian, survivor, and advocate with a dedicated focus on creating safer environments in sports. Currently, Joanna coordinates the Athletes Network for Safer Sports, a program of the Sport & Rights Alliance, where she facilitates global collaboration between athletes and allies impacted by abuse. Through her work, she aims to amplify the voices of those affected and drive systemic changes in sport governance. She holds a Master’s degree in Sports Ethics and Integrity from the University of Leuven, Belgium, and a Bachelor’s in Physical Education from Faculdade Maurício de Nassau in Brazil.
As a guest researcher with the 'Safeguarding Sport & Society' team, Joanna brings a wealth of expertise and a deep understanding of athlete-centered, trauma- and violence-informed approaches. Her role focuses on ensuring that the team’s research integrates both theoretical and practical perspectives, with a strong emphasis on policies that foster safer sporting environments. Joanna's contributions are vital in connecting research with real-world applications, enhancing the impact of our work in safeguarding sports communities.
