Applied Psychology

You're fascinated by human behaviour and have a cool head and a warm heart

Those who enrol in the Applied Psychology programme choose to work with people; people who feel lost in life, in their families or in their jobs and could use guidance. They need someone who can support and guide them with warmth, attention and care. They also need someone who can keep a cool head; someone who uses the scientific expertise of psychology as their compass to help people get back on track.

We will train you to become a psychological consultant. You will learn how to identify problems and how to coach, counsel, train and advise, both preventively and proactively. You will combine field-specific knowledge with the skills of a modern professional: reflecting critically, giving and receiving feedback, embracing diversity, collaborating with others, gathering information and assessing scientific standards.

You must be studying at one of our partner institutions. You must be nominated by your home coordinator and accepted by the exchange programme at Thomas More (see admission procedure for exchange students).

As the courses are part of the second and third year of the regular program, a basic knowledge of the main fields in psychology is required.

The academic year in a nutshell

Below you can find an overview of the courses (under reservation of changes), with the number of credits per course. Credits express how many hours you need on average to process the subject matter (incl. lessons). Count about 25 to 30 hours for 1 study credit.

The combination of courses can be restricted by planning issues and needs to be communicated beforehand.
Courses marked with a * are offered fully online. This means you don't have to physically come to Belgium to take these courses.

Courses are part of the second and third year of the regular programme, a basic knowledge of the main fields in psychology is required.
If you master Dutch you can also attend the regular courses taught in Dutch. The combination of courses of the international programme and the regular programme can be restricted by planning issues.

Relevant for your curriculum

The course program aims to develop both the students’ theoretical knowledge and their practical skills. Special focus lies on three main areas of expertise: Clinical Psychology, Industrial and Organisational Psychology and School and Educational Psychology. The courses are selected according to their relevance to all main orientations within the field of applied psychology.

Antwerp is a vivacious, cosmopolitan area blessed with magnificent architecture, fashionable shops, lively pubs, dazzling monuments, inspired art works and restaurant tables piled with superb Belgian and multicultural food. Antwerp is also famous for its art and fashion. The city not only boasts a wealth of outstanding museums and beautiful architecture, it is also laced with refreshing greenery and urban haunts.

Optimal student support

During your stay in Antwerp, you will get plenty of support from the coordinators of the international program. You can turn to them with all your questions about classes, the curriculum and facilities at Thomas More University College, but also with questions about finding your way in Antwerp, health etc.
