Ruben Kimpen has been working as a director and (3D) graphic artist for various production houses, architectural firms and building promoters for 15 years. He closely follows all technological developments around 3D and XR.
New technologies have fascinated me since childhood. Every time a new computer was bought at home, I was itching to investigate what new software was included. Especially the graphics packages and the first 3D in the early 90s. Pure enjoyment. This interest has always remained. As a researcher, it is not only the research into the latest technology that is interesting, the search for how these technologies can be used in numerous fields and become so much more than a gadget for the end user is perhaps the most exciting.
I like to draw on my years of experience in the media sector where I worked as a director and graphic artist because of this I will quickly seek solutions starting from the visual. Content creation, both video and 2D and 3D, is a constant in my career. Besides, these are particularly interesting times, the evolution in 3D and XR in general is going fast. What seemed remote last year is the norm this year.
I have been working as a researcher at Thomas More since 2021. In that short time, the expertise among my colleagues in the field of XR struck me strongly. I joined a passionate team and my background in the media sector and extensive knowledge in 3D provided a good addition to the profiles within the team. In a short time, we realised impressive projects for retail and the broadcast sector with the production of a children's programme based on all the research around XR as the highlight.
