Stages of behavioural change in stuttering

Within STAGES, we develop Dutch (translated) questionnaires that enable stutter therapists to gain insight into possible therapy goals as well as the client's readiness to engage in them.

About this project

Contemporary stutter therapy focuses on speech-related aspects (stuttering more easily, speaking more fluently), improving communication skills and developing more autonomy. These three therapy goals are hierarchically related and essential for successful long-term change. Being able to assess to what extent the client and/or his/her environment is ready for change gives stutter therapists a clearer compass regarding joint clinical decision-making.

Rodgers et al (2022) developed a 'Stages of Change' questionnaire for adolescents and are currently working on a version for adults. This questionnaire consists of three parts, namely the Stages of Change-, Decisional Balance- and the Situational Self-Efficacy-scale. Together, they provide information on the stage the client and/or his environment are in and provide clear guidance for therapeutic points of contact.

This project aims to translate and standardise the (existing) English questionnaires for adolescents and adults into Dutch.
